Manchester United hold talks with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite
Manchester United have held preliminary discussions with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite over a potential summer transfer, according to reports. The talks, confirmed by journalist Ben Jacobs on The United Stand, signal a renewed effort from the Old Trafford club to sign the 23-year-old centre-back, who has been a long-term target.
The England international was United's primary defensive target in the summer of 2024, but the club's new INEOS-led hierarchy refused to meet Everton's asking price, which was reported to be around €85 million. Despite Branthwaite suffering injury issues this season, United's interest has persisted, with a meeting said to have taken place with the player's representatives in February. It was suggested during those discussions that Branthwaite would be interested in a move to Manchester.
Branthwaite's profile rose significantly following a successful loan spell at PSV Eindhoven during the 2022-23 season, where he won the KNVB Cup and impressed with his composed left-footed play. He has since established himself as a key figure for Everton, earning his first senior England cap last year. His potential acquisition is seen as a move to bolster a United defence that has struggled for consistency and has been hampered by injuries to key players like Lisandro Martinez.
For Everton, the sale of a prized asset would represent a significant financial decision as the club continues to navigate profitability and sustainability regulations. A substantial fee for Branthwaite could provide crucial funds for squad rebuilding under manager Sean Dyche. The player's current contract at Goodison Park runs until 2027, giving the Merseyside club a strong negotiating position.
In other United transfer news, the future of on-loan forward Marcus Rashford at Barcelona remains uncertain. Although Rashford has contributed 21 goal involvements in 39 appearances for the Catalan club, his high wage demands and Barcelona's financial constraints mean his permanent move is not guaranteed. Journalist Lluis Carrasco has stated that Rashford faces a defining period with Raphinha injured, needing to prove his worth in crucial upcoming fixtures.
Meanwhile, uncertainty continues to surround club captain Bruno Fernandes. According to CaughtOffside, United's hierarchy is divided on whether to sell the Portuguese midfielder this summer, with interest from the Saudi Pro League and other clubs. Some within the club are keen to retain him, while others see a potential sale as an opportunity to generate significant funds for reinvestment in the squad.
Additionally, United have secured the future of academy prospect Jaydan Kamason, who has signed a new contract until 2028. The club is also reportedly monitoring Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers, who is said to be open to a move to a Premier League heavyweight, though Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool are also credited with interest. The pursuit of Rogers could intensify if Fernandes departs, as he is viewed as a potential creative replacement.
