Manchester United Face Stiff Competition for Dutch Prodigy Kees Smit
Manchester United have been urged to sign AZ Alkmaar's Dutch midfielder Kees Smit, with Rio Ferdinand insisting the club cannot afford to let the 20-year-old talent join a rival. The former United defender made the plea on his YouTube channel, highlighting the 20-year-old as a generational talent. According to Ferdinand, United must secure Smit's signature ahead of reported interest from Liverpool and Real Madrid.
United have made the signing of two new central midfielders a priority for the upcoming summer window. While the club has been heavily linked with a move for Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, the potential move for Kees Smit has gained significant traction following Ferdinand's public endorsement. The club has reportedly cooled interest in other targets, including Adam Wharton and Sandro Tonali, potentially clearing a path for a move for the Dutchman.
According to multiple reports, Smit is expected to be available for a fee in the region of €60 million to €75 million (£52m-£65m). The 20-year-old has been a revelation for AZ Alkmaar this season, contributing four goals and eight assists in 41 appearances across all competitions. His performances in the Eredivisie and the Europa Conference League have established him as one of the most promising young midfielders in Europe, with his creative passing, ball control, and long-range shooting drawing significant praise.
Ferdinand, a former United captain, was effusive in his praise for the young Dutchman. "Kees Smit is the truth, man, I’m telling you," Ferdinand said. "He’s one you go, ‘I’m buying him.’ It doesn’t have to be for now. I’ve seen him play a couple of times now and that’s all I need to see." Ferdinand added that he had consulted with contacts in the Netherlands who had reinforced his high opinion of the player.
However, United will face intense competition. Reports from Spain suggest Real Madrid have emerged as frontrunners for his signature, while Liverpool have also been strongly linked with a move, having reportedly moved ahead of Bayern Munich in the race earlier this year. Securing Smit would represent a major coup for United's new sporting structure, signaling a continued commitment to signing elite young talent. The club's ability to secure a top-four finish and offer Champions League football is likely to be a significant factor in any deal.
For AZ Alkmaar, the potential sale of their prized asset would represent a significant financial windfall, with the reported fee being a record sale for the Eredivisie club. For Manchester United, the move would be a statement of intent, bringing in a dynamic, creative midfielder who could shape the team's midfield for the next decade, provided they can win the intense battle for his signature against some of Europe's elite clubs.
