Manchester United have begun discussions with AS Roma regarding a potential transfer for midfielder Manu Koné, according to L’Équipe. The 25-year-old has attracted interest from several clubs following a strong showing at the recent World Cup, where France reached the semi-finals.
Koné effectively filled in for the injured Aurélien Tchouaméni in France’s midfield during the World Cup, partnering with Adrien Rabiot in matches against Paraguay and Morocco. Beyond Manchester United, Arsenal and two other unnamed English clubs are also reportedly interested in acquiring the player. Italian side Inter Milan has also registered an interest, but L’Équipe reports that Manchester United currently hold a leading position in negotiations.
Koné joined AS Roma two seasons ago and has become a key component in their midfield. He currently has a contract with the Italian club that runs until 2029, which could present a challenge to any potential suitor. The length of the contract suggests Roma will likely demand a significant fee for the player.
This potential move for Koné comes as Manchester United look to bolster their midfield options. The club has been linked with several midfield targets in recent transfer windows as they aim to strengthen their squad under Erik ten Hag.
