Manchester United make informal approach for Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly
Manchester United have made an informal enquiry to sign Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly, according to transfer reporter Ben Jacobs. The 19-year-old, who can play at left-back or in central midfield, is understood to be open to exploring a move in search of more regular first-team football. However, any deal is expected to be complicated and expensive, with Arsenal reluctant to sell a highly-rated academy product to a direct Premier League rival.
Speaking to The United Stand, Jacobs stated that while United have registered their interest and the player is considering his options due to limited minutes, suitors will have to 'overpay' to convince Arsenal to enter formal negotiations. The Gunners are not actively looking to move Lewis-Skelly on, meaning any buying club would first need the player to buy into the move to pressure his current club. An exact valuation has not been established, but it is anticipated to be a significant fee for the England youth international.
The move comes amid a backdrop of reduced opportunities for Lewis-Skelly at the Emirates Stadium this season. After a breakout 2024-25 campaign where he made 39 appearances and 23 Premier League starts, he has fallen down Mikel Arteta's pecking order. The arrivals and subsequent form of Piero Hincapie and Riccardo Calafiori have limited Lewis-Skelly largely to substitute appearances, with his last league outing dating back to January. This situation has alerted several clubs, with Chelsea also previously mentioned as an admirer.
For Manchester United, the pursuit aligns with a planned refresh at left-back ahead of the 2026-27 season. Luke Shaw remains the first-choice option, but the club is seeking reliable competition and cover. Tyrell Malacia is anticipated to depart this summer, while current squad member Patrick Dorgu is viewed by the coaching staff as a future left winger rather than a long-term full-back solution. Lewis-Skelly's versatility and homegrown status add to his appeal for the Old Trafford hierarchy.
Lewis-Skelly is not the only left-back on United's shortlist, however. Sources have confirmed the club is also monitoring Fulham's Antonee Robinson, Crystal Palace's Tyrick Mitchell, and RB Leipzig's David Raum. It also emerged this week that United scouts have watched Benfica's Samuel Dahl on more than ten occasions this season, indicating a broad search is underway. The final decision may hinge on which target represents the best value in a market where Arsenal will drive a hard bargain for Lewis-Skelly.
From Arsenal's perspective, a sale would represent a difficult decision on a player developed within their own system. The potential departure could be part of a wider squad reshuffle, with the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Ben White, and Christian Norgaard also reported to be unhappy with their playing time, while the club is said to be considering offers for Gabriel Martinelli. Losing a talented youngster to a rival would be a blow, but a substantial fee could provide funds for Arteta to reinforce other areas of his squad.
The coming months will determine if United's initial enquiry develops into a formal offer substantial enough to test Arsenal's resolve. For now, the situation remains at an exploratory stage, with the player's desire for minutes being the primary catalyst for the speculation.
