Manchester United have identified West Ham United defender Malick Diouf as a summer transfer target as they seek to bolster their options at left-back, according to talkSPORT. The report states that manager Michael Carrick's side are 'interested' in the 21-year-old Senegalese international ahead of the upcoming window, viewing him as potential competition for Luke Shaw and the injury-prone Patrick Dorgu.
Diouf joined West Ham from French side Lens for a fee of £22 million just last summer and has since become a key performer for the Hammers despite their difficult season. The club is currently embroiled in a relegation battle, sitting just two points above the drop zone. The left-back has contributed five assists in the Premier League this campaign, impressing with his pace and delivery from wide areas.
The potential transfer fee remains unclear, with talkSPORT noting there is 'no indication' of a price tag as yet, largely because 'a lot depends on the relegation battle.' Diouf is under contract at the London Stadium until 2030, but relegation could trigger a summer exodus, with United reportedly poised to capitalize. Even if West Ham survive, the club's stance on selling key players may be flexible. According to a TEAMtalk update, West Ham are determined to rebuff offers for Jarrod Bowen, Mateus Fernandes, and Crysencio Summerville, but Diouf is not among those unequivocally ruled out for a sale.
The player's own ambitions could also play a role in facilitating a move. In an interview last November, Diouf expressed a desire to eventually play for an elite club. "Ideally, I see myself at a top club, among the five best in the world," he said. "I think I have the potential to get there through hard work." While United's current status as a Champions League contender is a point of debate, the project under Carrick may still appeal to the young defender seeking a higher platform.
For United, the pursuit addresses a clear area of need. Luke Shaw has faced recurring fitness issues, while Tyrell Malacia is expected to depart after failing to establish himself in Carrick's plans. Securing a reliable, attacking left-back like Diouf would provide crucial depth and competition. For West Ham, a significant sale would represent important financial recourse, especially if they are relegated, but would also mean losing one of their more consistent performers from a difficult season. The coming weeks, as West Ham's fate is decided, will likely determine the seriousness and feasibility of United's interest.
