Manchester United weigh up midfield options amid Anderson interest
Manchester United are considering a move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson as part of a planned double midfield reinforcement this summer, according to sources close to the club. The Red Devils, under the direction of INEOS chiefs Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Jason Wilcox, have identified central midfield as a priority area and are evaluating several targets, with Anderson emerging as a prominent candidate.
The club is reportedly prepared to challenge Manchester City for Anderson's signature, with a potential transfer fee in the region of £80-100 million being discussed. The 23-year-old England international has been a standout performer for Forest over the past two seasons, attracting attention with his commanding displays in the Premier League. United view him as a player with a high ceiling who could develop into a top-level performer under the right guidance.
However, the pursuit has drawn scepticism from some quarters. Former England defender and talkSPORT pundit Danny Mills has questioned whether Anderson possesses the elite quality required to be a game-changer for both United and the national team. In comments reported by TEAMtalk, Mills pointed to the parallel rise of Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, suggesting the debate over England's next great midfield hope is far from settled.
United's recruitment strategy appears to favour younger, high-potential signings over established stars with significant financial overheads. This philosophy has reportedly led the club to cool its interest in Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali. Sources indicate concerns over the Italian's wage demands and his past betting ban have made the pursuit of alternatives like Anderson or Wharton more appealing from a value perspective.
The need for midfield reinforcements has been heightened by the expected summer departure of Casemiro and the potential exit of Manuel Ugarte. United's plan involves signing one marquee name to lead the midfield revamp, followed by a more cost-effective second addition. For the latter role, the club is monitoring players such as Wolverhampton Wanderers' Joao Gomes, Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand, and Freiburg's Johan Manzambi.
Manchester City's rival interest in Anderson complicates United's task, though reports suggest the player may favour a move to Old Trafford. The competition for his signature underscores the competitive nature of the upcoming transfer window as INEOS seeks to reshape United's squad. The club's activity in the midfield market will be a critical indicator of their new sporting direction and their ability to address a long-standing area of weakness.
