Roberto Mancini is poised to return as the manager of the Italy national team, according to reports in Italy. The former Inter Milan and Manchester City manager, currently with Qatari side Al Sadd, is the leading candidate to replace Silvio Baldini, who oversaw a recent 1-0 victory against Greece. Mancini previously managed Italy from July 2018 to August 2023, culminating in a Euro 2020 triumph.
Sources indicate that a four-year contract, worth €2 million per year until June 30, 2030, is prepared for Mancini. His appointment is seen as a key step in rebuilding the national team, particularly with the aim of qualifying for the 2030 World Cup after missing the last three tournaments. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) reportedly favored Mancini, due to a strong existing relationship with current presidential candidate Giovanni Malagò.
The election for the new FIGC president on June 22nd will likely finalize the appointment, with Malagò currently considered the frontrunner against Giancarlo Abete. Mancini reportedly edged out fellow former Italy manager Antonio Conte in the selection process. Conte had also been considered by the FIGC following his departure from Napoli.
Mancini’s immediate priority will be resolving his contract with Al Sadd, which runs until June 30, 2028. Once that is settled, he will be free to officially sign with Italy. Italy is scheduled to compete in Group A of the Nations League starting in September, facing France, Belgium, and Turkey. The long-term goals include preparing for the 2028 European Championship, hosted in the United Kingdom, and securing qualification for the 2030 World Cup, to be held in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.
Mancini’s first stint as Italy manager ended with a shock resignation in August 2023. He will be eager to address the disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, particularly the semifinal playoff defeat against North Macedonia. His return offers a sense of continuity and experience as Italy looks to regain its position as a major force in international football.
