Olympique de Marseille have expressed interest in Lille manager Bruno Genesio, according to a report in L’Équipe. Genesio’s current contract with Lille expires this summer, and his chances of remaining at the club are considered slim.
Genesio arrived at Lille in 2024 and has overseen two consecutive qualifications for European competition. This past season saw a particularly strong finish for Lille, securing direct qualification for the Champions League group stage for only the fifth time in the club’s history, finishing with a 13-match unbeaten run in Ligue 1. This success is largely attributed to Genesio’s leadership.
However, the report indicates that Genesio is experiencing personal fatigue, having recently suffered a personal loss. This, combined with a perceived lack of appeal regarding the geographical location, is contributing to his likely departure. Marseille, who finished within the top five in Ligue 1, represent an attractive alternative for the 59-year-old manager.
It is reported that Genesio has not yet informed his players of his potential departure, despite a team barbecue held on Monday. The potential move would see Genesio return to a club he previously managed Rennes, creating a notable shift in the Ligue 1 managerial landscape. Should Genesio move to Marseille, it could signal a period of significant investment and ambition for the southern French club, as they look to challenge for domestic honours.
This interest from Marseille comes at a time when other clubs are also finalizing their managerial positions ahead of the new season, making Genesio a sought-after candidate.
