Marseille's Search for New Sporting Director Intensifies After Ghisolfi Rejection
Olympique de Marseille have begun their search for a new sporting director after confirming Medhi Benatia will leave the role at the end of the season. Owner Frank McCourt announced the impending departure, prompting the club's management to immediately compile a shortlist of potential successors.
According to reports from La Provence, Marseille's primary target was Florent Ghisolfi, currently the sporting director at Sunderland. However, Ghisolfi has turned down the approach, preferring to remain with the English Championship side and manager Régis Le Bris. This rejection has forced Marseille to consider other candidates as they look to fill a crucial position ahead of the summer transfer window.
The club has now identified three main profiles. The first is Grégory Lorenzi, the sporting director at Stade Brestois. Lorenzi has been linked with moves away from Brest in recent summers and is seen as a candidate whose profile aligns with what Marseille's leadership is seeking. Another name under consideration is Julien Fournier, who previously served as Marseille's general secretary between 2004 and 2009 before an eleven-year stint at Nice, where he held a similar influential role.
The third candidate is former Paris Saint-Germain and French international midfielder Mathieu Bodmer, who has moved into a sporting director role in recent years. The search is ongoing, and the final appointment may yet be a name not currently in the public domain. The process is being overseen by McCourt's new executive team at the club.
Benatia's departure marks a significant change in Marseille's sporting structure. The former Moroccan international defender, who enjoyed a distinguished playing career with clubs like Juventus and Bayern Munich, only took up the position in the summer of 2023. His exit after a single season suggests a strategic shift as Marseille aims to build a squad capable of consistently challenging for Champions League qualification.
The appointment will be critical for the club's direction. The new sporting director will be tasked with overseeing player recruitment and sales, working within the financial constraints of Ligue 1 while attempting to close the gap to PSG. The timing is also key, with the summer window offering the first major opportunity for the new appointee to shape the squad for the 2024-25 campaign. Marseille currently find themselves in a mid-table position, making the upcoming rebuild all the more urgent.
