Martin Zubimendi dismisses Real Madrid transfer links, commits to Arsenal
Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi has publicly addressed and dismissed speculation linking him with a summer move to Real Madrid. The Spain international, speaking after Arsenal's Champions League quarter-final victory over Sporting CP, stated he has not been paying attention to the rumours and indicated his focus remains solely on his current club.
Zubimendi joined Arsenal from Real Sociedad last summer for a fee reported to be around €70 million. In his debut season at the Emirates, the 27-year-old has become a pivotal figure in Mikel Arteta's midfield, making 48 appearances across all competitions. His performances have seen his market value, as estimated by FootballTransfers, rise to beyond the €80 million mark, solidifying his status as a key asset for the Gunners.
Reports from Spain had suggested Real Madrid were monitoring Zubimendi's situation as they seek to reinforce their midfield ahead of the new season. The La Liga giants are known to be in the market for a central midfielder, with names like Paris Saint-Germain's Vitinha and Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez also mentioned as potential targets. However, when asked by Cadena SER about the interest from Madrid, Zubimendi was clear. "I have no answer, but I haven't been paying much attention to all that," he said. "I think that's all in the past and I have other things on my mind."
This public commitment provides significant reassurance for Arsenal, who have built their midfield structure around the Spaniard's disciplined, deep-lying role. His importance was underscored by his UEFA Man of the Match award in the second leg against Sporting, a performance that helped secure a semi-final berth. His statement effectively ends any immediate prospect of a transfer saga developing this summer, allowing both player and club to plan with certainty.
For Real Madrid, Zubimendi's comments mean they will have to pursue alternative options. Their search comes as they look to eventually replace the ageing Luka Modric and could coincide with a potential departure, with Eduardo Camavinga's future also subject to speculation following his recent red card in their own Champions League exit. Madrid's need for midfield reinforcements remains, but Zubimendi will not be the solution.
The news also contextualises Arsenal's own reported interest in other midfielders, such as Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali. Any potential move for another player in that position would now be viewed as complementing, rather than replacing, Zubimendi. His commitment allows Mikel Arteta to build his plans for next season around a settled core, with the Spaniard expected to continue as the linchpin in the engine room as Arsenal challenge on multiple fronts once again.
