Marvin Friedrich is set to return to 1. FC Union Berlin this summer upon the expiry of his contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach, according to a report from Sky Germany. The 30-year-old defender has reportedly already signed a contract with his former club that will run until 2028 and includes an option for a further year.
The move brings Friedrich’s two-and-a-half-year spell with Gladbach to a close, reuniting him with the club where he initially made his name in the Bundesliga. Friedrich first joined Union Berlin in January 2018 from FC Augsburg and became a key figure in their historic rise from the 2. Bundesliga to European qualification, making over 100 appearances before his departure in January 2022.
His time at Borussia-Park, however, has been defined by a lack of consistent playing time. This season, according to the report, Friedrich has managed just seven appearances totalling 149 minutes of action for the Foals. With his contract set to expire and no extension agreed, a departure this summer had been widely anticipated.
For Union Berlin, securing Friedrich on a free transfer represents a shrewd piece of business as they look to bolster a defence that has conceded 49 goals in the Bundesliga this season. His familiarity with the club’s structure and culture under manager Urs Fischer, who coached him during his first stint, is seen as a significant advantage. The reported long-term contract indicates Union’s belief that Friedrich can rediscover his best form and contribute significantly despite his recent inactivity.
For Gladbach, Friedrich’s departure continues a process of reshaping their defensive options under manager Gerardo Seoane. The club had already decided against triggering a contract extension for the experienced centre-back, allowing him to leave as a free agent. His exit will free up wages and a squad place as Gladbach plan for the upcoming transfer window.
The transfer marks a full-circle moment for Friedrich, who will aim to re-establish himself as a Bundesliga regular at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. His return provides Union with experienced defensive depth as they plan for another season of top-flight football, while Gladbach move on from a player who failed to secure a regular starting role.
