Union Santa Fe left-back Mateo del Blanco is poised for a move to French club Strasbourg, according to reports from L'Equipe, in a shift from earlier speculation that had linked the Argentine defender directly with Chelsea. The 22-year-old, who also holds a Spanish passport, is expected to command a fee in the region of €3 million. The deal would see Del Blanco join Strasbourg on a permanent transfer, with no direct involvement from Chelsea in the transaction.
Initial reports in March, originating from Argentina, had suggested Chelsea were closing in on an agreement to sign Del Blanco with the intention of immediately loaning him to their sister club Strasbourg. However, the latest information from France indicates Strasbourg are now pursuing the signing independently. L'Equipe's report makes no mention of Chelsea's involvement, signalling a potential change in strategy from the multi-club network.
This approach aligns with the operational realities facing BlueCo, the ownership group of both Chelsea and Strasbourg. Clubs under the same ownership cannot trade players if they qualify for the same UEFA competition, a scenario for which BlueCo has reportedly established a blind trust to manage Strasbourg's transfers. Furthermore, with a limited number of international loan slots available, it often proves more practical for Strasbourg to acquire players directly who are not yet ready for Chelsea's first team.
Del Blanco has emerged as one of the more promising full-backs in Argentine football. Primarily a left-back but also capable of playing in more advanced roles, he has already amassed over 100 senior appearances for Union Santa Fe. In the current Apertura campaign, he has contributed two goals and an assist in 15 appearances. His performances had also attracted interest from domestic giants Boca Juniors and River Plate earlier this year, but a move to Europe has long been anticipated.
The reported shift to a direct Strasbourg acquisition follows a pattern seen with other BlueCo-linked signings. Senegal midfielder Pape Diong was initially slated for Chelsea in 2024 before ultimately joining Strasbourg, while Paraguayan attacker Julio Enciso signed for the French side in 2025 with a view to a future Chelsea move. Strasbourg are not alone in their interest for Del Blanco, however, with Ligue 1 rivals Lyon and Toulouse also said to be monitoring the situation.
For Strasbourg, securing a young, versatile defender with significant first-team experience at a modest fee represents a sensible piece of business. For Chelsea, the development allows them to avoid using a valuable loan slot while still seeing a talent join their network, where his development can be tracked closely. Del Blanco's imminent move underscores the increasingly nuanced and strategic nature of multi-club operations in the modern transfer market.
