Matteo Darmian completes permanent transfer from Inter to Monza
Inter defender Matteo Darmian has completed a permanent transfer to fellow Serie A side Monza, according to reports in Italy. The 34-year-old versatile defender leaves the Nerazzurri after three and a half seasons, having arrived from Parma in the autumn of 2020. While the precise financial details were not disclosed by either club, the move is understood to be a free transfer, with Darmian signing a contract with Monza.
Darmian’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter at Inter, where he became a reliable and adaptable squad member under managers Antonio Conte and Simone Inzaghi. Capable of playing across the entire back line, he made 120 appearances for the club, contributing nine goals. His tenure included winning two Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia trophies, and three Supercoppa Italiana crowns, with his experience proving invaluable in both a starting and rotational role.
The move represents a logical next step for the veteran Italian international. With Inter having already secured the signing of Mehdi Taremi on a free transfer and with other defensive reinforcements expected, Darmian’s opportunities at San Siro were likely to become more limited. For Monza, managed by Raffaele Palladino, the acquisition brings a wealth of top-level experience, tactical intelligence, and proven Serie A pedigree to a squad looking to consolidate its top-flight status and build on consecutive mid-table finishes.
Darmian’s career, which includes spells at Manchester United and Torino in addition to Parma and Inter, has been defined by consistency and professionalism. His ability to slot into multiple defensive positions offers Palladino valuable flexibility in his tactical setups. For Inter, the transfer continues a summer of squad evolution, focusing on refreshing an aging core while maintaining a competitive edge across all competitions.
The deal was reportedly facilitated by the strong relationship between Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio and his former Torino colleague, now a key figure at Monza. This professional rapport has smoothed the path for several transfers in recent years. Darmian’s immediate task will be to integrate quickly with his new teammates as Monza prepares for the upcoming Serie A campaign, aiming to build on the solid foundations established since their promotion.
