Max Verstappen Weighs In on Messi vs. Ronaldo Debate in F1 Feature
Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has offered his perspective on football's perennial debate, praising Lionel Messi's unique talent while acknowledging Cristiano Ronaldo's extraordinary work ethic. The Red Bull Racing driver made the comments during a video feature for trading card company Topps with his F1 team.
In the video, Verstappen expressed particular admiration for the Inter Miami and Argentina forward. "We see a lot of players who need to run, who have to position themselves to score. He can score from anywhere, at any moment, and you think you can counter him, but it's impossible. You can't stop him," Verstappen said, according to the segment shared on Red Bull Racing's official Instagram channel. "He scores as soon as he seizes the opportunity. You simply can't counter him."
When pressed on the long-standing comparison between the two modern icons, the Dutch driver found it difficult to choose a definitive favourite. "I find it impossible to choose because I think Messi has more talent than Cristiano, but Cristiano has worked incredibly hard and has remained in incredible physical shape," Verstappen stated, offering a balanced view that reflects a common dichotomy in the discussion: Ronaldo representing supreme dedication and Messi symbolising innate genius.
The comments from the four-time F1 champion highlight the global crossover appeal of both football stars, whose rivalry dominated European club football for over a decade while they played for Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively. Verstappen, a highly dedicated athlete in his own right within the demanding world of Formula 1, is well-placed to appreciate the different paths to sporting excellence.
This is not the first time a prominent athlete from outside football has weighed in on the Messi-Ronaldo debate, underscoring their status as two of the most recognisable and discussed athletes on the planet. Messi, now 36, continues his career in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami after leading Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, while Ronaldo, 39, plays for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia after a storied career across England, Spain, and Italy.
Verstappen's focus remains on his own championship defence with Red Bull Racing in the F1 season, but his brief foray into football commentary provides a fresh, elite athletic perspective on a conversation that continues to captivate fans worldwide. The light-hearted segment ultimately reinforces the unparalleled legacy both players have built, leaving the subjective verdict to the individual viewer.
