Kylian Mbappé is at the center of growing controversy at Real Madrid following a disappointing season for the club and a perceived lack of commitment from the forward. The situation escalated after Madrid lost La Liga to Barcelona and following reports of a disagreement between teammates Tchouameni and Valverde.
Recent reports indicate a fractured relationship between Mbappé and the club’s supporters, stemming from the player’s decision to take a vacation in Sardinia with actress Ester Exposito while recovering from injury, rather than supporting his teammates at the Bernabéu. This prompted a petition with over one million signatures calling for the club to sell the France international.
During Real Madrid’s recent 2-0 victory over Real Oviedo, Mbappé was met with a chorus of boos upon entering the match as a substitute in the 69th minute, replacing Gonzalo Garcia who had just scored the opening goal. Despite providing an assist for Jude Bellingham’s second goal ten minutes later, the atmosphere surrounding the 1998-born player remains hostile.
Despite a statistically impressive season with 41 goals and 7 assists across all competitions, Madrid’s failure to win any major trophies has intensified scrutiny on Mbappé. The forward himself stated after the match that manager Arbeloa informed him he was the fourth-choice attacker, behind Mastantuono, Vinícius Júnior and Gonzalo Garcia, a claim Arbeloa disputed in a post-match press conference, stating he was simply making decisions based on the team’s needs. Mbappé also indicated he does not watch Arbeloa’s press conferences, preferring French television.
Arbeloa’s position as manager is also reportedly under threat, with José Mourinho being touted as a potential replacement. The ongoing issues suggest a turbulent summer ahead for Real Madrid, with Mbappé’s future at the club far from secure.
