Emmanuel Mbemba, the 18-year-old centre-back, is set to join AS Monaco after deciding against a transfer to Arsenal, according to L'Equipe. The France youth international will sign his first professional contract with the Principality club, opting to remain in Ligue 1 despite strong interest from the Gunners.
Mbemba had informed Paris Saint-Germain of his intention to leave the club in search of a clearer path to first-team football, having reportedly turned down a new contract with the Parisian side. He captained PSG’s U18 team and attracted attention from multiple clubs, with Arsenal emerging as strong favourites for his signature in recent weeks.
Arsenal’s pursuit of Mbemba was described by French media as a “dirty trick”, reflecting the club’s increased focus on bolstering their youth ranks with promising talents under sporting director Andrea Berta. The Gunners had even proposed a potential loan spell back to Paris, with a suggestion of a loan to Paris FC, a club geographically close to PSG, but this arrangement will no longer proceed.
Ultimately, Mbemba appears to have prioritised a more immediate opportunity for senior football. Arsenal’s already well-stocked defensive options, coupled with potential work permit complications, likely contributed to his decision. Monaco’s plan for the young defender remains to be seen, with the possibility of either immediate first-team integration or a more gradual introduction to the senior squad. Mbemba’s departure continues a recent trend of promising young players leaving PSG in pursuit of regular playing time.
This move represents a setback for Arsenal’s youth recruitment strategy, though they will likely continue to pursue other young talents. For Monaco, securing Mbemba adds a highly-rated defender to their ranks, potentially strengthening their squad for the upcoming season.
