Illan Meslier is set to join Arsenal on a free transfer following his departure from Leeds United, according to The Athletic. The 26-year-old French goalkeeper will likely serve as the third-choice option behind David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga at the Emirates Stadium. The move will also facilitate a loan spell for Arsenal’s young goalkeeper Tommy Setford next season.
Meslier initially joined Leeds in 2019 on a loan deal from Lorient, quickly impressing and earning a permanent contract at the end of the season. He played a key role in Leeds’ promotion to the Premier League and remained the club’s first-choice goalkeeper until the end of the 2024-2025 campaign.
During his time as a regular starter, Meslier established himself as a reliable Premier League goalkeeper, playing 107 top-flight matches for the club. However, the arrival of Karl Darlow in 2025 saw Meslier relegated to the bench, sharing playing time with Lucas Perri, resulting in a season without appearances for the Frenchman.
Over seven years with Leeds, Meslier made a total of 215 appearances across all competitions. Arsenal’s acquisition of Meslier provides experienced cover in the goalkeeping position without requiring a significant transfer fee, offering stability as Raya and Kepa compete for the starting role. Setford’s loan move will be crucial for his development, providing him with regular first-team football.
