FC Metz have agreed a deal to sign forward Abdourahmane Mbodji from Senegalese academy Génération Foot, the club confirmed on Tuesday. The 18-year-old, who turned 18 on April 22nd, will join the Ligue 2 side ahead of the upcoming season, with Metz having been recently relegated from Ligue 1. Financial details of the transfer were not disclosed.
Mbodji was the top scorer for Génération Foot’s academy team this season, registering 11 goals in 25 matches in the Senegalese Championship. His performances attracted interest from several European clubs, including Olympique de Marseille and Lille in France, as well as Galatasaray of Turkey and Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany, according to L’Équipe. Despite reported interest from these clubs, Mbodji has opted to begin his professional career with Metz.
Génération Foot has become a well-known source of talent for European clubs in recent years, having previously developed players such as Sadio Mané and Ismaïla Sarr. The academy’s focus on developing technically gifted and physically dynamic players has made it a popular scouting destination for clubs across the continent. Mbodji’s profile appears to fit this mould, described as a mobile attacker with a keen eye for goal.
Metz will be hoping Mbodji can contribute immediately to their promotion push in Ligue 2. The club finished 16th in Ligue 1 last season and will be aiming to bounce back to the top flight at the first opportunity. Mbodji’s arrival provides a boost to their attacking options and offers a promising young talent for the club to build around. The move represents a significant step up for the young Senegalese player, providing him with the platform to showcase his abilities in European football.
