Tahirys Dos Santos, the FC Metz defender who survived a fatal ski resort fire in Switzerland last December, has provided an update on his recovery and his footballing future. In an interview with French radio station France Inter, the 21-year-old full-back confirmed his physical condition is improving and reiterated his ambition to play for Metz despite the club's recent relegation.
Dos Santos was caught in the devastating blaze at the Constellation residence in Crans-Montana on New Year's Eve, a tragedy that claimed 41 lives. He described a lengthy recovery process, stating he was treated across four different hospitals before being able to return to his home in Lorraine. The player also offered a positive update on his partner, who was placed in a medically induced coma, noting that her condition is improving daily.
During the interview, Dos Santos recounted a poignant moment from the aftermath of the fire, where he made a promise to a young medical intern named Amandine who helped calm him. "She came to talk to me, to reassure me," he said. "I told her that if I signed a professional contract, I would give her tickets to come see me play." Dos Santos fulfilled that promise shortly after, signing his first professional deal with Metz at the end of April.
The defender's commitment comes at a time of upheaval for his club. FC Metz was officially relegated to Ligue 2 last weekend following a 2-1 defeat to Monaco. Despite the club's drop to the second tier, Dos Santos remains focused on his career goals. "We always have the same dreams," he stated. "I hope to play at the Stade Saint-Symphorien."
Dos Santos, a product of Metz's academy, had broken into the first-team setup prior to the tragic incident. His resilience and commitment to return to the pitch provide a positive narrative for a club facing a difficult rebuild in Ligue 2. His recovery and subsequent professional signing are seen as a significant morale boost for Metz, who will be looking to integrate their promising young defender back into the squad as they prepare for a promotion challenge next season.
