Milan are prepared to sell forward Rafael Leão this summer, with the club initiating talks with his representatives, according to reports in Italy. The Portuguese international’s future at the San Siro is uncertain following the appointment of Paulo Fonseca as the new head coach, with Leão reportedly not fitting into Fonseca’s tactical plans.
Leão joined Milan from Lille in 2019 and was a key figure in their Serie A title win in 2022, contributing significantly with goals and assists. However, his form has been inconsistent since, leading to reported tensions and a perceived lack of tactical fit under previous managers Marco Giampaolo, Stefano Pioli and Fonseca. He has made 291 appearances for the club, scoring 80 goals.
Milan are seeking a fee of at least €60 million for the 26-year-old, significantly lower than his reported €100 million release clause. The club is also open to considering a loan deal with an obligation to buy. So far, interest has been limited to preliminary inquiries from Barcelona and Manchester United, while a proposal was also made to Tottenham Hotspur. Offers from clubs in Saudi Arabia and Turkey have not appealed to the player.
The proceeds from any sale of Leão would be used to fund a move for another Portuguese forward, Gonçalo Ramos. Milan are reportedly keen to strengthen their attacking options, and view Ramos as a suitable addition. The club aims to secure a definitive agreement to ensure a financial return on their initial investment. Leão himself is reportedly open to a new challenge in a different league, having previously expressed his desire for a different environment.
