Milan are considering a move for Atalanta’s sporting director Tony D’Amico, 46, as a potential replacement for current director Paolo Tare, according to reports in Italy. The situation surrounding Tare is currently under review following a season where significant investment did not translate into desired results, particularly in securing Champions League qualification.
D’Amico is expected to depart Atalanta at the end of the current season, a departure acknowledged by Atalanta president Luca Percassi, who stated he understands D’Amico may be “courted like the players” due to his success at the club. Percassi emphasized the continued respect for D’Amico despite the likely separation, suggesting the parting will be amicable. D’Amico arrived at Atalanta in 2022 from Verona and has been instrumental in the club’s recent successes.
During his time at Atalanta, D’Amico oversaw a period of sustained European qualification, including a Europa League campaign, a Coppa Italia final appearance, and two Champions League qualifications. He is particularly known for his ability to combine sporting success with financial sustainability, a profile that would appeal to Milan’s current ownership. At Verona, he orchestrated several high-value player sales, generating significant profit from players like Kumbulla, Rrahmani, and Amrabat, who were acquired for under €4 million and sold for over €60 million.
At Atalanta, D’Amico continued this trend, overseeing the acquisitions of players such as Ederson, Charles De Ketelaere (on loan from Milan), Gianluca Scamacca, and Teun Koopmeiners. He also facilitated the sale of Andrea Retegui to Saudi Arabia for a substantial profit, having signed him for €20 million and selling him for €65 million. Should a position become available at Milan, D’Amico is prepared to pursue it, though a potential reunion with Gian Piero Gasperini at Roma is also a possibility. Napoli is another club that could emerge as a contender for his services, depending on future developments.
