Morten Hjulmand, the 26-year-old captain of Sporting CP, has reportedly bid farewell to teammates and staff, signaling his intention to leave the club this summer. The news, initially reported by Portuguese newspaper Record, suggests Hjulmand is seeking a new challenge after three seasons in Lisbon.
This potential departure was anticipated, with Hjulmand having previously attracted interest from Manchester United last year. Sporting resisted those advances, as well as a potential move initiated by current Milan manager Ruben Amorim, who brought the player to Sporting in 2023. However, a commitment was reportedly made to allow Hjulmand to leave at a reduced fee this summer.
Amorim’s recent appointment as Milan coach has further fueled speculation surrounding a move for Hjulmand. The Milan manager is believed to highly value the Danish midfielder, having previously entrusted him with the captain’s armband after just one season at Sporting. Amorim views Hjulmand as an ideal central midfielder and has expressed interest in bringing him to Milan, though this alone does not guarantee a transfer.
Sporting previously offered a similar assurance to Viktor Gyokeres, but ultimately received significant bids for the player, leading to his sale to Arsenal. While Hjulmand has attracted attention from other clubs, including Atletico Madrid and several Premier League sides, Milan could enter the race with a bid in the region of €35-40 million if no more substantial offers emerge. However, this fee may be considered excessive given Milan’s current strength in midfield, though Amorim is reportedly keen on the acquisition and Hjulmand is open to a return to Italy, having previously played for Lecce in Serie A.
