AC Milan are showing strong interest in eighteen-year-old Greek midfielder Konstantinos Karetsas, currently playing for Genk, with the potential transfer hinging on the sale of Rafael Leao, according to reports from Italian media. The club has reportedly dispatched representatives to Belgium in an attempt to finalize a deal, though Genk have yet to accept any offers and Karetsas himself is weighing his options.
Karetsas is reportedly keen to take the next step in his career, with Serie A appealing to the young player. However, he is unwilling to wait indefinitely for a resolution and is also considering a proposal from Borussia Dortmund. Should RedBird Capital partner Gerry Cardinale fail to initiate talks with Genk promptly, Karetsas may opt for the German side to avoid another season in Belgium.
Borussia Dortmund have already sent sporting director Lars Ricken and scout Ole Book to Belgium to discuss a deal with Genk officials, reaffirming their interest in the player. While an agreement between the clubs is not yet in place, Dortmund are considered serious contenders. Genk are seeking a €35 million fixed fee plus €5 million in add-ons, while Dortmund have incrementally increased their offer from an initial €30 million, including complex bonus structures. Currently, Dortmund are in a stronger position to secure the deal, as they have the financial flexibility to act without needing to sell players first.
Milan are hoping to generate funds through the sale of Leao to Fenerbahce, which would then be allocated towards the Karetsas transfer. However, Fenerbahce are currently hampered by exceeding the foreign player limit in the Turkish Super Lig, possessing 23 foreign players when the limit is 14, and must sell players before making a formal bid. Leao, who had previously dismissed a move to Turkey, is now more receptive to the offer, which includes a salary of €8 million plus €4 million in achievable bonuses. Despite this, Dortmund’s current financial freedom gives them a significant advantage in the pursuit of Karetsas.
Cardinale arrived in Italy from Los Angeles and held meetings with manager Paulo Amorim at Milanello to discuss transfer strategies, with both agreeing that Karetsas would be a valuable addition to the squad. However, Dortmund remain a substantial obstacle. Milan are determined to pursue the transfer until the end, and a departure for Leao could provide the necessary funds to complete the deal.
