Milan have agreed a €30 million deal, including bonuses, to sign defender Mario Gila from Lazio, the club confirmed on Tuesday. The Spanish centre-back arrived at Linate Airport in Milan on Tuesday evening and is expected to undergo a medical examination on Friday at the La Madonnina clinic before finalising his contract at Casa Milan.
Gila will sign a five-year contract with the Rossoneri, earning a net salary of €5 million per season. The transfer represents a significant investment for Milan, making him the fourth-highest paid defender in the club’s history, behind Leonardo Bonucci, Mattia Caldara, and Alessandro Nesta.
The 23-year-old defender bid farewell to Lazio supporters at the club’s training camp in Formello earlier on Tuesday before travelling to Milan via a private charter flight. Gila joined Lazio from Atlético Madrid in 2022, initially on loan before making the move permanent. He made 31 Serie A appearances for the Biancocelesti, becoming a regular fixture in their backline.
Milan manager Paulo Amorim is expected to deploy Gila as a right-sided centre-back in his preferred three-man defence, potentially replacing Fikayo Tomori, who has been linked with a move away from the club. The acquisition of Gila strengthens Milan’s defensive options ahead of the upcoming Serie A season, as they aim to build upon their recent performances. The club is also anticipating the arrival of forward Gonçalo Ramos later this month.
This deal signifies Milan’s intent to reinforce their squad during the summer transfer window, addressing a key area of need with a promising young defender. Gila’s arrival provides competition and depth in central defence, offering Amorim tactical flexibility as he looks to challenge for top honours.
