Milan are considering a move for Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte, according to reports in the British press. The 25-year-old Uruguayan international has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford and is reportedly a key target for new Milan manager Ruben Amorim, who previously worked with Ugarte at Sporting.
Ugarte joined Manchester United from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2024 for a reported £42 million. However, he has struggled to establish himself in the team, making only eight Premier League starts last season and finding himself outside of manager Michael Carrick’s plans. This lack of playing time has led to speculation about his future, with Milan emerging as a potential destination.
Amorim’s appointment as Milan manager has triggered widespread anticipation of a squad overhaul, backed by owner Gerry Cardinale. The Portuguese coach is expected to reshape both the technical staff and the playing squad, and Ugarte is seen as a potential solution to strengthen Milan’s midfield. Amorim clearly values Ugarte’s qualities, having previously managed him at Sporting.
Currently, Ugarte is on international duty with Uruguay, participating in the Copa América tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico under coach Marcelo Bielsa. Despite his current commitments, Amorim has reportedly identified him as a priority target for the upcoming transfer window. The potential move could provide Ugarte with a fresh start and a more prominent role in a new league.
Milan are also expected to address other areas of the squad, including the future of Rafael Leão, whose potential departure has been a long-running saga. The club is also likely to pursue a new central striker, and have been linked with a move for Luka Modrić, though Amorim appears to favour Ugarte as a key midfield addition. Securing Ugarte would represent a significant step in Amorim’s rebuilding project at the San Siro.
