Milan and Juventus in transfer battle for Bayern's Goretzka

AC Milan and Juventus are locked in a head-to-head battle to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka on a free transfer this summer, according to reports from Italy. The 29-year-old German international will see his contract with the Bundesliga champions expire on June 30, making him one of the most sought-after free agents on the European market.

Both Serie A giants have identified Goretzka as a primary target to bolster their midfield ahead of the new season. Milan's interest is reportedly being driven by manager Massimiliano Allegri, who has personally insisted on the signing. Allegri is said to have reiterated his desire to bring Goretzka to San Siro during a meeting with club executives Geoffrey Moncada and CEO Giorgio Furlani this week, marking the latest in a series of discussions about the club's summer plans.

At Juventus, new coach Luciano Spalletti is also keen on adding Goretzka's experience and trophy-winning pedigree to a midfield that currently features Manuel Locatelli, Adrien Rabiot, and Weston McKennie. The Turin club believes a player of Goretzka's caliber, who has won 17 major titles with Bayern Munich, could provide vital leadership and a winning mentality as they aim to challenge Inter Milan's domestic supremacy and improve their Champions League performances.

Goretzka's potential move was already explored in the January transfer window, when Atletico Madrid appeared close to a deal. However, the player and Bayern mutually agreed to postpone any departure until the end of his contract. His representatives are now fielding significant interest, with financial demands understood to include a salary in the region of 5 to 5.5 million euros per year plus bonuses, alongside a substantial signing-on fee and agent commissions.

For Allegri, securing Goretzka is seen as a key part of a wider summer rebuild that could involve five or six new signings, with a new striker also a priority. The manager's future at Milan, despite links to the Italian national team, is believed to be contingent on receiving technical guarantees and backing in the transfer market, especially with the club having secured Champions League football for next season. Goretzka would likely slot into a midfield trio, potentially alongside Luka Modric, should he stay, and the trusted Rabiot.
