Mircea Lucescu Hospitalised After Suffering Heart Attack
Legendary Romanian football manager Mircea Lucescu has been hospitalised in Bucharest after suffering a heart attack, according to reports from specialist journalist Emanuel Rosu. The 78-year-old was already in hospital following a cardiac incident last Sunday, which occurred just before a training session, when he suffered a further serious attack on Friday.
Rosu reported that Lucescu was saved after three resuscitation attempts and is currently in the emergency department awaiting further examinations. The former Romania national team coach was admitted to hospital last weekend after initially falling ill. His fragile health was the stated reason for his departure from the Romania managerial role earlier this year.
Lucescu is one of the most respected and well-travelled coaches in European football history, with a career spanning over four decades. He is best known for his transformative and highly successful spell with Ukrainian powerhouse Shakhtar Donetsk, where he won eight Ukrainian Premier League titles and the UEFA Cup in 2009. His managerial journey has also taken him to several other prominent clubs, including Inter Milan, Galatasaray, and Zenit Saint Petersburg.
His tenure with the Romanian national team, which began in 2022, was cut short due to these health concerns. The Romanian Football Federation confirmed his departure in November of last year, citing the need for the veteran coach to prioritise his wellbeing. His hospitalisation has prompted an outpouring of concern from across the football world, where he is widely admired for his tactical acumen and longevity in the game.
The news casts a shadow over Romanian football, where Lucescu is considered a national icon. His influence extends beyond his trophy haul, having shaped the careers of countless players and maintained a reputation for developing exciting, attacking teams. His condition is being closely monitored, with the football community awaiting further updates on his health. The immediate focus remains on his recovery, with his family requesting privacy during this challenging time.
