Mitchell Weiser has extended his stay at Werder Bremen, the Bundesliga club announced on Tuesday morning. The 32-year-old has signed a new contract, securing his future with the northern German side after his previous deal was set to expire this month. While Werder Bremen did not reveal the exact length of the extension, sources understand it to be a one-year agreement.
Head of Professional Football at Bremen, Peter Niemeyer, expressed the club’s satisfaction with the renewal, stating, “We are delighted to continue our journey with Mitchell.” Niemeyer further emphasized the club’s belief in Weiser’s abilities, adding they are optimistic he will contribute creatively in the upcoming season following his recovery from a knee injury.
The contract negotiations between Weiser and Bremen had been ongoing for several months, reportedly complicated by the club’s insistence on a heavily performance-based contract structure. This approach reflects Bremen’s cautious approach to player contracts, linking remuneration directly to on-field contributions.
Weiser endured a challenging 2025-26 season, sidelined for the entirety of the campaign due to a cruciate ligament injury. Prior to the injury, the wing-back had been a regular fixture in the Bremen squad, known for his energetic performances and attacking contributions. He joined Werder Bremen in 2021, becoming a key player in their attempts to establish themselves as a Bundesliga force. The extension represents a vote of confidence in his recovery and continued value to the team.
The renewal provides Werder Bremen with an experienced option at wing-back as they prepare for the new season, and allows Weiser the opportunity to regain his place in the first team after a lengthy period of rehabilitation. This contract extension solidifies Bremen’s squad depth ahead of a potentially competitive Bundesliga campaign.
