Inter midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan is set to sign a one-year contract extension with the club, according to Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio. The agreement will keep the 35-year-old at the San Siro for another season, extending a spell that began in 2022.
Ausilio revealed the unusual circumstances surrounding the renewal, stating Mkhitaryan conducted the negotiations independently, without the involvement of a representative. He described the Armenian international as a player “above the average in every aspect,” both on and off the pitch, highlighting his self-management and career control. Ausilio affectionately nicknamed Mkhitaryan “the Armenian train,” praising his consistent performance.
Mkhitaryan’s current contract is due to expire on June 30th, and the renewal will involve a slight reduction in his salary from €4 million net per season. Despite the pay decrease, the player readily accepted the terms, demonstrating his commitment to the club. The extension was particularly encouraged by Inter assistant manager Cristian Chivu, who views Mkhitaryan as a key figure for the upcoming campaign.
The veteran midfielder reportedly considered retirement before deciding to continue playing, ultimately swayed by Chivu’s desire to have him remain part of the squad. His experience and leadership qualities are seen as invaluable, particularly in guiding younger players and integrating new signings. Mkhitaryan will turn 36 in January but continues to contribute significantly to Inter’s midfield.
Having previously played for Roma and Arsenal, Mkhitaryan has established himself as a reliable performer in Serie A. His ability to influence matches both defensively and offensively makes him a valuable asset for Simone Inzaghi’s team. The contract extension ensures Inter retain an experienced head as they aim to defend their Serie A title and compete in the Champions League.
