Henrikh Mkhitaryan has signed a contract extension with Inter, the club confirmed following comments made by the player at the team’s training camp in Donaueschingen, Germany. The 37-year-old midfielder will remain at the San Siro for another year, accepting a reduced salary to continue his career with the Nerazzurri. Mkhitaryan was the only senior player whose contract expired last month to agree to an extension.
Mkhitaryan spoke to the media after a training session, stating his belief that he can improve upon his performances from last season. He explained that his decision to stay came after discussions with the club following the match against Bologna, where he assessed his ability to contribute for another year. While acknowledging his age, he emphasized his readiness to help the team achieve their ambitious goals, including winning Serie A, the Coppa Italia, the Supercoppa, and making a strong run in the Champions League.
The Armenian international also praised the work of Inter coach Cristian Chivu, highlighting his impact since taking over and expressing the team’s support for his leadership. Mkhitaryan described the squad as a “family” united in their pursuit of collective objectives. He dismissed any specific focus on revenge against rivals AC Milan, stating the team’s aim is to win against all top opponents, though he acknowledged last season’s struggles against bigger teams despite winning the Scudetto.
Mkhitaryan also expressed his satisfaction with the development of younger players within the squad, specifically mentioning Massolin and Stankovic, and noting Asllani’s increased confidence following a recent loan spell. He pledged to support the younger generation and share his experience, acknowledging he is now the sole remaining player in his age bracket following the departures of players like Sommer, Acerbi, and Darmian. He intends to use his experience to help the team and its younger players succeed.
