Luka Modric is leaning towards remaining at AC Milan for another season, according to reports from Italy. Following Croatia’s elimination from the World Cup, the 38-year-old has been considering his future, but a continued role at the San Siro appears increasingly likely.
Modric received a personal call from AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale, who expressed the club’s desire for him to stay. Cardinale reportedly views Modric as a key player to build the team around, alongside figures like Mike Maignan, Adrien Rabiot, and Christian Pulisic. While Modric’s contract included an option for an extension through 2026-27, that clause expired on June 30th.
The potential arrival of new manager Ruben Amorim has also influenced Modric’s thinking, with Amorim indicating the veteran midfielder is an important part of his plans. Modric did not immediately return to Europe with the Croatian national team, instead remaining in the United States for a period, during which he weighed his options.
Although a final decision has not been made, a mutual willingness to continue the partnership exists. Modric is reportedly pleased with his experience at Milan, particularly as his daughter, Ema, plays for the club’s Under-13 team. He initially harbored some doubts after Milan failed to qualify for the Champions League, but the prospect of attempting to regain a Champions League spot is appealing.
Under Amorim, Modric’s role is expected to evolve. The new manager’s more demanding and offensive style of play will require a different approach from the midfielder, potentially involving a rotation system to manage workload given Milan’s commitments in Serie A and the Europa League. Modric may be strategically used, starting some matches and being substituted earlier in others, or coming off the bench to influence games in the latter stages, similar to his role at Real Madrid in recent seasons. The veteran remains driven by his passion for the game and a desire to contribute at the highest level.
