Luka Modric is contemplating remaining at AC Milan for another season, though a final decision hinges on discussions with newly appointed manager Ruben Amorim, according to reports from Italy. The 38-year-old Croatian midfielder has enjoyed his time in Milan, with his family settling well into life in the city and his daughter, Ema, currently playing in the club’s youth system.
Modric recently reached a milestone, making his 200th appearance for Croatia against Panama, but acknowledged the physical demands of international football, particularly with a busy schedule of Nations League matches looming in September. He is reportedly considering retiring from international duty after the current tournament to focus on club football. The veteran feels the strain of playing multiple games per week and is aware his physical capabilities are not what they once were.
Milan have communicated their desire to retain Modric, valuing his experience and influence within the squad. The club recognizes his ability to control the tempo of matches and his key role both with and without possession. A previous rapport with manager Massimiliano Allegri suggested a clear tactical fit, with Allegri known for utilizing players like Modric in a deep-lying playmaker role.
However, Modric’s primary concern is Champions League football, a competition Milan will not be participating in next season. While financial considerations and playing time are not major factors, the allure of the Champions League remains strong. The plan being discussed involves a reduced role, potentially limiting his appearances to selected matches and avoiding some Europa League fixtures. If Modric feels comfortable with this arrangement, he is likely to extend his stay at the San Siro, offering a boost to Milan supporters amid transfer market uncertainty. The club is also reportedly working to retain other key players, including Christian Pulisic, amid interest from Major League Soccer.
