Luka Modric is contemplating retirement following AC Milan’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, while Rafael Leao has reaffirmed his desire to remain with the Rossoneri. The news comes after Milan’s season concluded with a disappointing result, leaving Modric, at nearly 41 years old, questioning his future in professional football.
Modric joined Milan last year, fulfilling a childhood dream of playing for the club, despite their absence from European competition. He has an option for a further year with the club, and both Gerry Cardinale and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are hoping he will extend his stay. However, the Croatian midfielder is concerned about the club’s future direction and the lack of immediate prospects for challenging for trophies. He repeatedly expressed a desire to win silverware with Milan, a goal that appears increasingly distant with a complete overhaul of the club’s management. Modric also had a strong relationship with recently departed manager Max Allegri, further contributing to his uncertainty.
Before considering his club future, Modric will participate in his fifth World Cup, which could serve as a farewell tour. The veteran midfielder has enjoyed a distinguished career, notably winning six Champions League titles with Real Madrid, and feels he deserved a final appearance in the competition with Milan. A late penalty attempt against Cagliari, which narrowly missed, may have signaled the end of his time in club football.
Rafael Leao, meanwhile, has a contract with Milan until 2028 and, despite a season of inconsistent form hampered by physical issues, is determined to stay. Several Turkish clubs, including Galatasaray, have expressed interest and are prepared to offer him a substantial salary of €10 million net per year. However, Leao has reportedly informed Ibrahimovic of his commitment to Milan and his desire to regain his form with the club. He aims to turn recent criticism from the San Siro crowd into support. Milan may still consider a sale if a suitable offer is received, but Leao’s preference is to remain in Italy.
