Luka Modric is weighing the possibility of extending his stay at AC Milan, with recent conversations with club officials and new coach Paulo Fonseca playing a significant role in his potential decision. According to reports in Italy, Milan executives, including owner Gerry Cardinale, and Fonseca have both contacted Modric to express their desire for him to remain with the club.
This comes after a period of uncertainty following a disappointing end to last season, where Milan fell short of expectations. Modric, who recently participated in the World Cup, initially contemplated retirement, but positive feedback from his body during the tournament has encouraged him to consider another season. He has been evaluating whether to continue playing without former coach Stefano Pioli and without Champions League football.
The 38-year-old’s potential renewal is looking increasingly likely, influenced by his appreciation for Cardinale’s efforts to revitalize the club and the promising impression made by Fonseca. Modric has reportedly been impressed by the club’s aggressive approach to the transfer market and the renewed sense of direction. The comfortable lifestyle his family has established in Milan is also a contributing factor.
Fonseca views Modric as a crucial figure both on and off the pitch, recognizing his experience and leadership qualities within the squad. While the team is expected to undergo significant changes, Modric’s presence would provide stability. Milan is also keen on integrating young midfielder Fisnik Jashari into the first team, and Fonseca envisions a shared role in midfield between Jashari and Modric, alongside a likely mainstay in Adrien Rabiot. This would involve a rotational approach, managing Modric’s workload to ensure he remains effective throughout the season, especially given his age and the demands of a potentially competitive European campaign.
Jashari, who had limited playing time last season, could benefit from Modric’s mentorship as he develops his game. The arrangement would avoid a direct competition for a starting spot, allowing both players to contribute to the team’s success. This potential co-existence could prove vital as Milan aims to rebuild and compete on multiple fronts.
