Luka Modric is set to sign a contract extension with AC Milan, with an official announcement expected imminently, according to reports from Italy. The Croatian midfielder will join the team on their tour of Australia after finalizing the deal. This extension will see Modric play exclusively for Milan through the 2026-27 season, after which he intends to retire from international football.
Modric is currently on holiday, but signals from both Milan’s management and the Croatian Football Federation indicate the agreement is finalized. The 38-year-old will turn 41 during his final season with the club, and he is determined to end his career on a high note. He does not want his final memories to be marked by Milan’s failure to qualify for the Champions League and Croatia’s disappointing showing in the recent World Cup.
He communicated his decision to Croatia national team manager Slaven Bilić, and an announcement to fans is expected shortly. Modric will play his final international match on October 6th in a Nations League fixture against Spain in Split. The veteran midfielder has been a key figure for Croatia for over a decade, earning 186 caps for his country.
Milan manager Paulo Fonseca is also assessing Juan Estupiñán, who continues to attract interest from Aston Villa. While the English club are pushing for a quick transfer, Fonseca wants to evaluate Estupiñán in training before deciding whether to keep him or allow him to leave. Fonseca previously faced Estupiñán as an opponent in the English Premier League during the 2024-25 season and believes finding a suitable replacement would be difficult.
