Luka Modric continued his rehabilitation with individual training at Milanello on Wednesday, as the club prepares for a crucial Serie A clash against Atalanta.
The Croatian midfielder worked on a routine of light cardio and exercises, avoiding any strenuous activity or contact drills to protect his recently fractured left cheekbone sustained during a collision with Manuel Locatelli in the match against Juventus.
Modric is aiming to return to the squad for the final match of the season against Cagliari, hoping to contribute to Milan’s push for Champions League qualification. However, manager Max Allegri is hoping to secure their Champions League spot before the final game, making the Cagliari match potentially less critical.
Milan currently need two wins from their remaining fixtures against Atalanta and Genoa to guarantee Champions League football next season. Allegri is considering tactical changes following a disappointing performance against Sassuolo.
According to reports, Fodé Ballo-Touré could be deployed in a deeper midfield role against Atalanta, with Loftus-Cheek moving into a more advanced position. In defence, Matteo De Winter is expected to replace the suspended Fikayo Tomori.
The forward line remains a point of contention for Allegri, with both Noah Okafor and Christian Pulisic vying for a starting position alongside Rafael Leão. The club has not confirmed a starting eleven at this time.
Milan’s recent form has been inconsistent, raising questions about their ability to secure the necessary points for Champions League qualification. A win against Atalanta would significantly boost their chances and alleviate some of the pressure heading into the final weeks of the season.
