Luka Modric’s future at AC Milan is uncertain following a disappointing season that culminated in a Europa League qualification, according to reports emerging from Italy. The 38-year-old posted a message on Instagram expressing gratitude to the Milan faithful but also acknowledging that the season did not unfold as hoped, leading to speculation about a potential departure.
Modric arrived at Milan last summer after thirteen seasons with Real Madrid, tasked with helping the club return to Champions League contention. He quickly established himself as a key figure in midfield, and the team’s performances reportedly correlated with his presence on the pitch. However, Milan’s form dipped following a match against Juventus and a clash with Manuel Locatelli, culminating in a decisive defeat to Cagliari that sealed their Europa League place.
The Croatian midfielder’s Instagram post read, “A season with beautiful and difficult moments, but in the end we must face the harsh reality and admit that it did not end as we wanted! I would like to thank from the heart all the Milan fans for the affection, respect and great support they have shown me throughout the year! Forza Milan.” This message has prompted many Milan supporters to plead with him to stay, but reports suggest his future may lie elsewhere.
One prominent possibility is a return to Real Madrid. With Massimiliano Allegri recently dismissed as Milan manager following a restructuring initiated by owner Gerry Cardinale, and the club missing out on Champions League football, Modric may be inclined to seek a new challenge. Despite efforts from Zlatan Ibrahimovic to convince him to renew his contract, which is set to expire on June 30, 2026, Modric is reportedly considering other options. It remains unclear if a potential return to Madrid would be as a player, or in a directorial role within the club’s sporting area, potentially working alongside incoming manager José Mourinho. Modric featured in 34 matches for Milan this season, scoring two goals and providing three assists.
