AS Monaco have completed the permanent signing of Ansu Fati from FC Barcelona for a fee of around €11 million, the club confirmed on Tuesday. The Spanish international has signed a four-year contract with the Ligue 1 side, officially ending his time with the Catalan giants. The move follows a successful loan spell for Fati, where he demonstrated promising form and reignited his career after a period hampered by injuries.
Fati initially joined Monaco on loan for the 2023-24 season, seeking regular first-team football after struggling for consistent opportunities at Barcelona. Despite not always being a starter, making only 10 Ligue 1 starts, he proved to be a valuable asset, finishing as the club’s second-highest league goalscorer with 11 goals – behind only Folarin Balogun’s 13. This performance represented a significant step forward for the 21-year-old, who had faced setbacks due to serious knee and hamstring injuries in recent years.
Barcelona signed Fati from Sevilla’s youth academy in 2012, and he quickly rose through the ranks to become one of La Masia’s brightest prospects. He made his first-team debut for Barcelona in 2019 and quickly established himself as a key player, even earning international recognition with Spain. However, a devastating knee injury in November 2020 derailed his progress, leading to a prolonged period of recovery and impacting his form upon his return. He has 10 caps for Spain, scoring twice.
Monaco will hope that Fati can continue his resurgence in Ligue 1 and become a pivotal figure in their attack. Barcelona, meanwhile, will look to reinvest the €11 million fee as they continue to navigate their financial challenges and rebuild their squad under Hansi Flick. The permanent transfer provides both clubs with clarity and allows Fati to focus on establishing himself as a consistent performer in a competitive league.
