Bayer Leverkusen are closing in on the signing of Olympique Lyon winger Afonso Moreira, with the player reportedly giving his approval to the move. The Bundesliga side, who confirmed the signing of Kennet Eichhorn from Hertha BSC on Wednesday, are looking to bolster their attacking options ahead of next season.
Foot Mercato first reported the news of Moreira’s willingness to join Die Werkself, with Bild subsequently corroborating Leverkusen’s interest. The German publication values the 21-year-old at a transfer fee between €25-30 million. Negotiations between the two clubs are described as progressing well, with both parties aiming for a quick resolution to finalize the deal.
Moreira enjoyed a productive 2023-24 campaign with Lyon, directly contributing to 19 goals in 37 appearances across all competitions. He scored eight goals and registered 11 assists, establishing himself as a key player for the French club. His performances have attracted attention from across Europe, but Leverkusen appear to have moved decisively to secure his signature.
The Portuguese youth international, who has three caps for Portugal’s Under-21 team, began his professional career at Sporting CP before joining Lyon in 2022. He quickly adapted to French football, showcasing his pace, dribbling ability, and creative passing. Leverkusen’s interest suggests they see Moreira as a potential long-term asset, capable of thriving in Xabi Alonso’s dynamic attacking system.
Leverkusen’s pursuit of Moreira comes after a historic season where they secured their first ever Bundesliga title. Strengthening their squad with a player of Moreira’s calibre will be crucial as they look to compete on multiple fronts, including the Champions League, next season. The addition of Moreira would provide further competition for places and add another dimension to Leverkusen’s already potent attack.
