Jose Mourinho is in advanced negotiations to become the next manager of Real Madrid, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The Benfica manager has reportedly held direct talks with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez regarding a potential return to the Estadio Bernabeu.
TEAMtalk initially reported details of discussions between Perez and Mourinho two days prior, and Romano has now stated that a deal is “on” between the two parties. While Mourinho has publicly downplayed speculation surrounding a move, Romano claims that the Portuguese manager is prepared to accept the role should an official proposal be made.
Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, winning a La Liga title and a Copa del Rey during his tenure. His time at the club was marked by a fierce rivalry with Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona, and a complex relationship with the club’s hierarchy. He left the club under somewhat strained circumstances, and has since managed Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and most recently, Benfica.
The current Real Madrid manager, Alvaro Arbeloa, replaced Xabi Alonso in January 2026, but his position is now considered temporary. Sources indicate that Mourinho has assured Perez of his ability to manage the Real Madrid dressing room, and discussions have included the futures of key players such as Kylian Mbappe, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Federico Valverde. Valverde and Tchouameni were reportedly involved in a training ground altercation last week, adding to the need for a strong managerial presence.
Romano emphasizes that the decision ultimately rests with Perez, and whether he chooses to extend an official offer to Mourinho. However, he insists that Mourinho is not rejecting the possibility of returning to Madrid, and is awaiting further communication from the club. A swift appointment would allow Mourinho to shape the squad ahead of the next season and address the issues surrounding key players.
