According to reports in La Gazzetta dello Sport, relayed by MD, Mourinho has specifically requested Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni. The Italian international has been a long-term target for Barcelona, but a potential move to the Catalan club is now appearing increasingly unlikely, opening the door for Real Madrid to make a play for his signature.
Bastoni had reportedly been eager to join Barcelona this summer, however, a lack of progress in negotiations with Inter over recent weeks has led him to believe a transfer to Catalonia is no longer probable. A move to Real Madrid would still represent a desirable outcome for the 24-year-old, who has established himself as a key figure in Serie A.
The need for a left-sided centre-back is particularly acute for Real Madrid. With David Alaba’s departure already confirmed, Dean Huijsen remains the only natural left-footed option currently in the squad, and he is equally comfortable playing on the right side of defence. Bastoni’s arrival would therefore provide a significant boost to Mourinho’s defensive options.
Bastoni has been a consistent performer for Inter since joining from Atalanta in 2019, playing a vital role in their Serie A title win in 2021 and their run to the Champions League final in 2023. He has 32 caps for Italy, and is known for his ball-playing ability and defensive solidity.
