Incoming Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly considering a move for Chelsea right-back Josh Acheampong when he takes the helm at the Santiago Bernabéu this summer. The potential transfer comes as Los Blancos prepare for the departure of veteran defender Dani Carvajal, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season.
According to a report from Defensa Central, Mourinho views Acheampong as a viable option to bolster the right side of the defense. The Portuguese manager, who previously managed Chelsea and Manchester United, is familiar with the 20-year-old’s capabilities and believes he possesses the physicality to complement Trent Alexander-Arnold, who arrived at Real Madrid from Liverpool in the summer of 2025. While Alexander-Arnold is expected to be a key player for Mourinho, the report suggests the manager is wary of relying solely on the England international due to concerns over his fitness and consistency.
Acheampong has emerged as one of Chelsea’s brightest young talents, having made 42 first-team appearances for the Blues and contributing two goals. He is currently under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2029, which could complicate any potential deal. However, transfer journalist Pete O’Rourke reported in Football Insider in March that Chelsea have ‘no interest in sanctioning a sale’ of Acheampong, with Newcastle United and Crystal Palace also expressing interest.
Real Madrid are also reportedly considering other full-back options, including Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot, AS Roma’s Wesley Franca, AS Monaco’s Vanderson, and Feyenoord’s Givairo Read. Mourinho could also turn to youth academy prospects Jesus Fortea or David Jimenez to fill the void left by Carvajal. Dalot, in particular, has been a long-term target for Real Madrid, with reports from December 2025 indicating the club was monitoring his situation at Manchester United. Mourinho previously worked with Dalot at United, potentially increasing the likelihood of a reunion.
The arrival of Xabi Alonso as Chelsea’s new manager in July could further impact any potential move for Acheampong, potentially making it more difficult for Real Madrid to secure his signature. The situation remains fluid, and Mourinho will likely assess all available options before making a final decision on how to strengthen the right-back position.
