José Mourinho is set to return to Real Madrid as the club’s new manager, following a disappointing season that saw the team finish without major trophies. The appointment comes after Álvaro Arbeloa, who took over mid-season, confirmed he will depart at the end of the current campaign.
Arbeloa was initially appointed as caretaker manager in January, stepping up from his role with the club’s youth sides and Real Madrid Castilla. Despite securing 17 wins in 27 matches, his tenure was ultimately unsuccessful, with Real Madrid losing ground to Barcelona in the La Liga title race and being eliminated from the Champions League by Bayern Munich. Arbeloa addressed the media prior to the final match of the season against Athletic Bilbao, expressing gratitude for the opportunity and stating his hope to return to the club in the future.
“I am very grateful to the players for what we have experienced,” Arbeloa said. “I have tried to do my best for Real Madrid. There were disagreements with the players, but that is normal and we resolved them with respect. I leave without regrets, with many friends and with gratitude towards the club.”
Speculation had linked Arbeloa with a potential role as Mourinho’s assistant, but he swiftly dismissed those suggestions. “Mou has a fantastic technical staff,” he stated. “If he comes here, he will come with his group, as is right. There is no possibility that I can be part of his staff.” He indicated his intention to pursue new challenges independently.
Mourinho’s return marks a significant shift for Real Madrid, who are seeking to regain their dominance in both domestic and European competitions. His previous spell at the club, from 2010 to 2013, yielded a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey, and a Champions League triumph. The Portuguese manager’s tactical acumen and experience are expected to be vital in rebuilding the squad and challenging for silverware. The club has yet to announce the terms of Mourinho’s contract, but the appointment signals a clear ambition to return to the pinnacle of European football. This move is expected to bring a more direct and experienced approach to the management of the team.
Arbeloa also briefly commented on the ongoing Negreira case, expressing concern over the scandal and calling for a resolution to the matter, which he believes has damaged Spanish football’s reputation.
