José Mourinho is poised to return to Real Madrid as manager, according to reports from Spanish publication AS. The Portuguese coach’s second spell at the Santiago Bernabéu is expected to begin after Benfica’s final league match of the season against Estoril. Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, winning La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup titles during his tenure.
AS reports that all agreements are in place for Mourinho’s return, mirroring previous decisions by Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez to re-appoint successful former managers such as Zinedine Zidane and Carlo Ancelotti. Mourinho’s initial departure in 2013 followed a challenging relationship with the club and players, but Pérez appears willing to overlook past issues in pursuit of a revival for the Spanish giants. He is expected to sign a two-year contract.
Mourinho’s current role at Benfica has been relatively short-lived, taking over in January 2024. Prior to joining the Portuguese side, the 61-year-old has managed Chelsea (two spells), Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Roma, and Fenerbahçe, demonstrating a consistent ability to compete at the highest levels of European football. He won the UEFA Europa League with Roma in 2022, adding to his impressive collection of trophies that includes Champions League titles with Porto and Inter Milan.
The move comes at a time of instability for Real Madrid, who recently saw Carlo Ancelotti depart. The club finished the 2023-24 La Liga season in second place, behind rivals Barcelona, and will be looking to regain their dominance in both domestic and European competitions under Mourinho’s leadership. Rebuilding team morale and cohesion will be a key challenge for the incoming manager, as the current squad has reportedly experienced internal divisions.
Mourinho’s appointment signals a clear intent from Real Madrid to return to a more direct and assertive style of play, characteristics often associated with his management. The club will hope his experience and tactical acumen can restore their position as one of Europe’s elite teams.
