Alessandro Bastoni, the Inter Milan defender, has emerged as a potential target for Josè Mourinho should the Portuguese manager return to Real Madrid, according to reports in Italy. The possibility arises as Mourinho is heavily favored to take the reins at the Spanish club, pending the outcome of their presidential elections on June 7th.
Bastoni was previously linked with a move to Barcelona earlier this year, with speculation intensifying between February and April following off-field issues and a crucial international match for Italy. However, a transfer to the Camp Nou failed to materialize, reportedly due to Barcelona’s tactical reservations and Inter’s valuation of the player, which was believed to be in the region of €45-50 million. Bastoni also reportedly appreciated the support he received from Inter fans during their recent Serie A title celebrations.
Mourinho’s potential arrival at Real Madrid has prompted the club to draw up a list of transfer targets, including two central defenders, with Bastoni identified as a key candidate. The Portuguese manager is reportedly seeking to overhaul the squad following two consecutive second-place finishes in La Liga. A two-year contract with an option for a third season is reportedly being prepared for Mourinho, but his appointment is contingent on Florentino Perez winning the presidential election.
Should Mourinho secure the Real Madrid job, the club will need to pay a release clause to Benfica, potentially rising to €14 million depending on the timing. Beyond Bastoni, Mourinho is also reportedly interested in Inter’s Nico Paz, potentially disrupting Inter’s plans for the young Argentinian midfielder. Inter are believed to be seeking around €70 million for Bastoni, a figure that may be within Real Madrid’s reach. The Italian press suggests Bastoni is among Mourinho’s top priorities to reinforce the Real Madrid defense, alongside the expected contract renewal for Antonio Rüdiger.
Bastoni’s availability for a swift integration into the Real Madrid squad is also seen as a benefit, as Italy failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. However, any potential move remains on hold until after the Real Madrid presidential election. Inter may also consider including a player in any deal for Bastoni, such as Arda Guler, to sweeten the agreement.
