Bayern Munich icon Thomas Müller has indicated he would be open to returning to the German club in a future administrative capacity, though he remains focused on his current playing commitments with the Vancouver Whitecaps. The 36-year-old made the comments in an interview with Bild, stating he doesn’t rule out a return “in the long term,” but emphasized it is not a current priority.
Müller joined Vancouver Whitecaps in February 2024, bringing a wealth of experience to Major League Soccer after a decorated career with Bayern Munich. He spent the vast majority of his professional life with the Bavarian giants, making over 600 appearances and winning 11 Bundesliga titles, two Champions League crowns, and a FIFA World Cup with Germany. His contract with the Whitecaps is set to expire at the end of the year, leading to speculation about his future.
Despite contemplating potential off-field roles, Müller stressed his immediate focus remains on playing. He acknowledged the significant commitment required for a leadership position at Bayern Munich, referencing comments made by former club executives Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge about the need for extensive preparation and experience. He stated that taking on such a role would require intensive preparation and the accumulation of diverse experiences.
Müller also admitted uncertainty regarding his future beyond his current contract with the Whitecaps, noting that discussions are ongoing. He expressed a willingness to continue playing if his recent form continues, but remained noncommittal about specific plans. While he hasn’t identified a particular role within the Bayern Munich structure, he is clearly considering the possibility of contributing to the club in a different capacity once his playing days are over. This potential return could see Müller leverage his deep understanding of the club’s culture and values in a management position.
