Newcastle United are set to sign Osasuna winger Victor Munoz, with the player opting for a move to St. James’ Park despite interest from Manchester United and Liverpool, according to reports in Spain. The 22-year-old Spain international has reportedly prioritized consistent playing time as a key factor in his decision.
AS reports that both Manchester United, under manager Michael Carrick, and Liverpool, led by Andoni Iraola, made enquiries about Munoz’s availability. Barcelona also expressed interest, but Munoz has consistently indicated a preference for joining Newcastle. The report details that the player and his agent, Juanma Lopez, were given the freedom to choose his destination by Real Madrid, who previously held the player’s rights.
Munoz enjoyed a productive season with Osasuna, making 36 appearances across all competitions and contributing seven goals and five assists. He has also been included in the Spain squad for the 2026 World Cup finals, demonstrating his rising profile within international football. He is capable of playing on either flank, offering tactical flexibility to Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.
Interestingly, Real Madrid have retained a one-year buy-back option as part of the deal. Having sold Munoz to Osasuna in the summer of 2025, Los Blancos did not activate their initial buy-back or right of first refusal clauses, but instead negotiated a future option to re-sign the winger. This suggests Madrid still value Munoz’s potential and see him as a player who could contribute to their squad in the future. Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson is understood to have been a key driver in pursuing the transfer. The move bolsters Newcastle’s attacking options ahead of next season and provides competition for existing wide players, potentially increasing squad depth and tactical versatility.
