Julian Nagelsmann has left his position as manager of the German national team, according to Sky Sports Germany. The departure follows Germany’s round of sixteen exit at the World Cup, where they were defeated by Paraguay on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
The German Football Association reportedly held a meeting with Nagelsmann on Thursday lasting over three and a half hours. Sources indicate that Nagelsmann was given an ultimatum: resign or be sacked. He is expected to formally tender his resignation in the coming days.
Nagelsmann took charge of the national team in 2023, tasked with revitalizing a side that had failed to progress past the group stage of a World Cup since 2014. Despite his efforts, the team could not meet expectations at the tournament, leading to widespread disappointment, as expressed by the president of the German Football Association after the defeat to Paraguay.
The search for a replacement is already underway, with several names being linked to the vacant position. Antoine Kombouaré, Pascal Dupraz, and Jürgen Klopp are all reportedly contenders for the role. Klopp, in particular, has been heavily touted as a potential successor, offering the possibility of a return to international management.
This managerial change marks a significant shift for German football as they look to rebuild and restore their status as a major force in international competition. The appointment of a new manager will be crucial in shaping the team’s future and preparing for upcoming tournaments.
