Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann has delayed the announcement of his squad for this summer's World Cup, according to the German Football Association (DFB). The initial plan to name the squad on May 12 has been pushed back by over a week, with the new date now set for May 21.
The DFB confirmed the schedule change on Tuesday, stating that Nagelsmann requested the extension to allow for the conclusion of the domestic season. The Bundesliga campaign finishes on May 18, meaning the coach will have a full view of players' form and fitness from the final matchday before making his final selection. This decision provides Nagelsmann with crucial extra time to assess any late-season injuries or dips in performance among his pool of candidates.
In a related move, the start of the team's pre-tournament training camp in Herzogenaurach has also been postponed. It will now begin on May 27, two days later than originally planned. This adjustment directly accommodates players involved in the DFB-Pokal final between Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart, which is scheduled for May 23. The later camp start grants those cup finalists additional recovery time before joining the national team setup.
The World Cup, to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, begins for Germany with a group stage match against Scotland on June 14. Nagelsmann's squad is expected to be a blend of experienced veterans and younger talents emerging in the Bundesliga. The delay underscores the coach's meticulous approach and desire to base his decisions on the most complete set of information possible, minimizing the risk of selecting a player whose season ends on a negative note or with a fresh injury.
This period represents a critical final audition for several players on the fringe of the squad. With key matches, including the cup final and the final Bundesliga fixtures carrying European qualification implications, Nagelsmann will be monitoring performances closely. The revised timeline reflects the modern challenges of international management, where club commitments run deep into the season, necessitating flexibility to ensure the best possible squad is assembled for a major tournament.
