Frédéric Guilbert has signed a contract extension with FC Nantes, the club announced on Tuesday, despite their recent relegation to Ligue 2. The new deal will keep the right-back at the Stade de la Beaujoire until 2028, with an additional year option included.
Guilbert arrived at Nantes in January after terminating his contract with Italian side Lecce. According to a statement released by the player on X, the move to Nantes came at a crucial time in his career, allowing him to rebuild both personally and professionally. He acknowledged his responsibility for the team’s failure to avoid relegation but expressed optimism for the future with the club.
The 31-year-old has featured in 8 appearances for Nantes since joining mid-season, contributing to their ultimately unsuccessful fight against the drop. Prior to his time in Italy and France, Guilbert amassed 233 Ligue 1 appearances throughout his career, establishing himself as a consistent performer in the French top flight. He began his career at Valognes, progressing through the youth ranks before making his professional debut.
This extension represents a significant show of faith from Nantes, retaining an experienced player as they prepare for life in the second tier. It also demonstrates Guilbert’s commitment to the club, despite the setback of relegation. The move provides stability to Nantes’ defense as they aim for a swift return to Ligue 1, and allows Guilbert to continue playing at a high level after a challenging period in his career.
